Adding a new addition to the family is stressful on any household. It changes the environment from one that is calm and schedule-based into a highly emotional, exhausting, sleepless space that most find overwhelming.

In the midst of this environment, the last thing you need to be worrying about is trying to determine how safe your nursery is while your little one snoozes. Having everything in place before your new arrival will make this transition in your life a lot smoother.

That’s why we’ve put together a few do’s and don’ts of a safe nursery that we know will help you confirm you’ve done everything you need to in order to keep your little one snoozing safely.

DO: Keep Baby on Their Back

Always put your baby on their back to sleep as this is the safest position for healthy babies. Make sure their sleeping environment is clear of toys and other blankets and that they are dressed for sleep using layers as you would dress or layer yourself: to be comfortable, neither too hot nor too cold.

DON’T: Use Head Coverings During Bedtime

According to Red Nose Australia, babies control their temperature through their heads and faces. While bub may look extra cute in their teeny little hat, it’s important to remember to remove them for bedtime to reduce the risk of overheating. Using a hat reduces your baby’s ability to use their head as a little radiator to give off any extra heat.

DO: Use Thermoregulating Bedding

As mentioned above, Infants are not great at regulating their core temperature. For one, their body temperature rises much faster than ours and they sweat less, which greatly reduces their ability to cool down. This is why it’s so important to use bedding that will help your little one regulate their temperature in both Summer and Winter months.

This is why we use thermoregulating linen for all of our baby bedding. Linen bedding is naturally breathable, can absorb moisture without trapping bacteria and is super easy to care for making it the perfect fibre for any household.

A nursery tip we love is keeping multiple versions of your bedding on hand for those delirious midnight changes. Simply layer one sheet over another with an absorbent waterproof layer in between so that you can remove the soiled linen sheet to reveal a fresh one in the middle of the night!

DON’T: Go for Cheap Synthetic Bedding

When choosing bedding it’s also important to make sure your selection is all natural, breathable with no nasties! Synthetic fibres are often the culprit of harbouring chemicals that can hurt your little one. We recommend looking for things like our OEKO-TEX certification which means that our linen baby bedding has been tested, and cleared for substances that may be harmful to human health.

Our linen is also European Flax certified and produced in line with European Flax ethical and environmental standards including: no irrigation, a rotation crop with no GMO, low use of fertiliser and pesticides with no defoliant, and zero waste from the flax crop.
